Moving to PEER1 (ServerBeach) Networks

Update Aug 30: The move was completed successfully. Everything should be running normal. If you experience any issues please contact us here.

Hi everyone,

Saturday night beginning at 12am EST we will be transitioning WebBasedCron’s servers from Bell Canada to ServerBeach (A PEER1 company). This will dramatically improve the reliability of WebBasedCron. Though the servers will now be located on the West Coast, the timezone will be set to Eastern Standard Time, so your cron jobs will run as expected. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing WebBasedCron.

If you have any questions please contact us.

Thank you,
George

Fighting Spam with ReCAPTCHA

For those that don’t know, a CAPTCHA is the image you see when filling out a form that you’re required to type out. The main purpose for these images is to fight spam. The term was coined in 2000 by Carnegie Mellon University and stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”.

ReCAPTCHA is a fantastic (free) CAPTCHA service designed also by Carnegie Mellon University that allows a website to protect themselves against spam. For example, now when a user goes to Register or submit a Support Request on WebBasedCron, they’ll see something like this:

captcha

To submit the form, the user will need to type in the text correctly. The best part about ReCAPTCHA is that by fighting spam it’s also helping to digitize books. You can learn more about it here, but basically the words displayed in the images are taken directly from real books. A fantastic innovation on an originally great idea.

Checking Server Status On-Demand

Hi everyone,

As you probably read in our previous post, this morning we experienced an infrastructure issue that caused WebBasedCron to go down for short period of time. The problem was fixed and everything is back to normal. A great comment was made requesting a way to monitor the status of WebBasedCron without needing to go to the site.

That said, I created a service which monitors WebBasedCron on an external server with the results shown here: http://status.webbasedcron.co.uk. You can also subscribe to the status using this RSS feed RSS. Please keep in mind the time displayed by the status URL is in UTC.

Thanks,
George
